Spring Forward into Daylight Saving Time

Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. on March 13, 2011. Be prepared to ease the effects on your body with these tips to help naturally reset your biological clock.

  • Alarm clockEarly to bed. The week before daylight saving time begins, start going to sleep about ten minutes earlier each night. This will help make the acclimation more gradual.
  • Don't give in to sleeping in. Even if you feel tired in the morning, sleeping in will only set you back in the long term. Naps will also hinder your adjustment.
  • Let the sun shine in. Increase your exposure to sunlight in the morning and daytime hours. Avoid light before bedtime.
  • Exercise, especially the afternoon before the time change. Exercising produces serotonin, a chemical in your brain that helps reset your biological clock. Serotonin also helps alleviate depression – a great additional benefit.
  • Relax. Take a warm bath or read a book to unwind before going to bed.
