Lightning Crashes

Darlene Hilbers

Darlene Hilbers

On Thursday, September 17th, we learned that Ryan’s Grandma, Darlene, was diagnosed with a blood clot in her lung. Sadly, it would not be treatable. Mary Greeley Medical Center Home Hospice began the next day. I was touched to learn how much the employee from Hospice helped my mother-in-law through the difficult time. She was there to learn about our family dynamics, asked about Darlene, what she liked, and what could be done for her to make her comfortable, happy, etc. She even offered to arrange for Darlene to go on a ride to see the Des Moines River Valley scenery, which she loved to do very much.

That day, Ryan, Tessa, and I were able to spend time with Darlene. Knowing this could be our goodbye was bittersweet. Darlene had health issues develop this year, and would soon no longer be in pain, but we would greatly miss her. She loved her family, possibly her great grandchildren (GG’s as she called them) the most. When we told her we were expecting Tessa in 2012, her face lit up, she jumped up in her chair and exclaimed, “I get to be a great grandma again!”

We knew we wanted to tell her that we were pregnant again, but thought that Friday we had a little more time. Sunday morning, Ryan received a call from his dad, that they got “the call”. The home had called and she went unresponsive on the way to breakfast. They were able to get her back in bed, where she became responsive again. Ryan hurried to get to the home, where he met his parents. They were able to be with her during her last moments, and Ryan whispered to her, “You’re going to be a Great Grandma again, so we need you looking out for us.” His parents heard, gasped, and Darlene passed away a few moments later.

Ed Kowalczyk, Lead singer of the band LIVE, wrote “Lightning Crashes”.
Lightning crashes a new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
The angel opens her eyes
The confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even close the door
Lightning crashes an old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
The angel closes her eyes
The confusion that was hers
Belongs now to the baby down the hall

As we mourn the loss of Darlene, we know she would want us to look forward to and love her new GG even more.
