Scholarship Serves as Springboard for Home Health Nurse
Lyman pursues advanced degree with eye toward service in a leadership position
Annually, the Kimberly A. Russel Auxiliary Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a Mary Greeley staff member pursuing a master’s or doctoral level degree. Named in honor of the contributions of the former Mary Greeley Medical Center CEO, in 2022 it was awarded to Audra Lyman, RN, BSN, of Mary Greeley Home Health.
A nurse who has worked in both the operating room and home health in her three years at Mary Greeley, Lyman is pursuing a master’s degree in Health Administration with an emphasis in Leadership from Capella University. She says receiving the scholarship offers more than a financial boost.
“I am absolutely honored to accept a scholarship in Kim’s name,” Lyman says, “especially when it comes in honor of somebody who was such a well-respected leader at Mary Greeley. Kim helped put us into the strong position we are now. Receiving this scholarship is incredibly humbling.”
Lyman has been encouraged to pursue additional schooling with an eye toward leadership because of a culture that supports mentoring and staff development at Mary Greeley. In both of her positions at the medical center, she has been inspired by her supervisors.
“Mentoring is encouraged throughout the medical center,” says Lyman, who has worked at Mary Greeley since 2019. “In the Operating Room, I worked under a director who put a real emphasis on mentorship and had so much leadership experience to share. Now in Home Health, that strong leadership atmosphere is there as well. I feel like the leaders here want staff to be successful and to meet their goals and aspirations.”
Support for advanced training and education has been a priority at the medical center for decades. More than 10 scholarships are awarded each year to staff members or to high school seniors pursuing a health-related career. All these scholarships are made possible by private gifts to the Mary Greeley Foundation.
In addition to scholarships, Mary Greeley also offers a robust tuition reimbursement program that staff members can tap into. All of it encourages life-long learning.
“Mary Greeley is very good about having offerings that support their employees,” Lyman says. “The scholarship I received is another example. I have decided that I want to continue my career at Mary Greeley and eventually move into a leadership position. This is helping me start down that path.”
Lyman is in the middle of her studies and enjoying every minute of being back in school. Upon completion she hopes to pay forward the mentorship and support she has received in a leadership position at Mary Greeley.
“I don’t know specifically what I would like to do, but I would love to work in a supervisor position in the future,” she says. “Beyond that, I am just looking forward to continuing down the path at Mary Greeley and seeing where it leads me.”
