Mary Greeley Measures Up!
A large metropolitan area with numerous options for excellent health care may set the bar high for what you might think a smaller, city-owned hospital could provide. However, Marianne and David Spalding learned first-hand that Mary Greeley Medical Center more than measures up!
David serves as Dean of the Ivy College of Business at Iowa State University, and Marianne is very active in the Ames community. The Spaldings moved to Ames in 2013 from Hanover, New Hampshire where David was a senior vice president at Dartmouth College. He previously worked on Wall Street for 29 years, and Marianne worked at a New York bank where she and David met. At the time, they had access to some of the best hospitals and health care in the country.
But, when Marianne fell on black ice and broke her hip while leaving a restaurant in Ames last February, she couldn’t have been more grateful that Mary Greeley Medical Center was close by and prepared to take such excellent care of her. She spent 12 days in the hospital recovering, followed by a much longer stint in out-patient physical therapy.
"I can't think of praise high enough to describe my experience as a patient at Mary Greeley,” said Marianne. “Communication at all levels of the organization and the kind and compassionate nursing care were the two aspects of my experience that impressed me the most. I was consistently informed of what would happen next and kept up to date on any results, for which I was very grateful. The nurses were phenomenal!”
Marianne wasn’t the only member of the Spalding family to receive care at Mary Greeley this past year -- David also took his turn. He had a knee replaced last June and was very complimentary of the team in the Operating Room and all who were involved in his stay. “Among other things, I was very impressed that staff always asked if there was anything else they could do for me as they left the room,” he said.
“We choose Mary Greeley for consistent quality care, and support the Mary Greeley Foundation to aid the hospital in their quest for excellence,” David said. “We are so impressed that Mary Greeley received the 2019 Malcom Baldrige National Quality Award. As a family who has had previous access to health care in much larger communities, we couldn’t be more proud of what Mary Greeley has to offer right here in Ames.”
