A Fitting Tribute
Namesake of William R. Bliss Cancer Center remembered for his compassion, commitment to patients
William R. Bliss, namesake of the William R. Bliss Cancer Center.
Long before his name was etched onto the William R. Bliss Cancer Center, Dr. William R. Bliss was known throughout Ames for something far more meaningful: His unwavering commitment to his patients.
A surgeon with McFarland Clinic and a leader at Mary Greeley Medical Center, Dr. Bliss practiced medicine in a way that left a lasting impression not only on his colleagues and community, but on his family as well.
“He just thought that the total care of the patient was his responsibility. He was accountable to his patients,” his son, David Bliss, says.
That approach to care often meant long days and even longer nights. House calls weren’t uncommon. Neither were late stops at the hospital after dinner nor responding to emergencies at a moment’s notice. For his children, including Carolyn Bliss, it was clear early on that their father's work was a calling.
“He was basically full on 24/7 if there was a need,” David says.
But it wasn’t just his availability that set him apart; it was his approach. Dr. Bliss treated patients as whole people, not just diagnoses. That mindset, his children say, is what makes the cancer center bearing his name such a fitting tribute.
Today, the William R. Bliss Cancer Center reflects that same philosophy. Beyond delivering exceptional clinical care, it surrounds patients with emotional, psychological, and practical support, from counseling and support groups to nutrition guidance and even services that help patients navigate the physical changes that come with treatment.
During 2026, the William R. Bliss Cancer Center is marking its 40th anniversary.
For the Bliss family, the naming of the center decades ago came as an honor—but not a surprise.
“It was almost a perfect recognition of the kind of care he gave,” David says.
Carolyn agrees. Each visit back to Ames—and to the cancer center—serves as a reminder that their father’s legacy lives on, not just in name, but in practice.
“It makes us all so very, very proud,” she says. “It means a lot to see his name connected to something that helps people in such a meaningful way.”
In many ways, the center stands as a bridge between generations of care. It is genuinely rooted in the values Dr. Bliss lived every day: compassion, accountability, and a deep respect for the people behind each patient story.
Because for Dr. William R. Bliss, medicine was never just about treatment. Delivering care was about truly serving those who needed it most.
