Speaker:  Joseph Merchant, MD, Oncology, McFarland Clinic

New cancer treatments are more successful so patients with advanced cancer now commonly survive years. These patients return to their primary care doctors needing care sometimes with new disorders brought on by cancer treatment but with amazingly good prognosis. What should every know about this new generation of cancer treatment?

Educational Objectives:

  1. Provide discussion of different types of cancer therapy in current use and their major side effects such as cytotoxic chemotherapy, check point inhibitor therapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates.
  2. Focus will be on actual patient cases, all of whom have advanced cancer.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand that patients receiving checkpoint inhibitor therapy should, where possible, avoid high dose steroid unless approved by oncology to avoid “turning off” the immune system.
  2. Understand that patients receiving CDK 4/6 inhibitors for metastatic breast cancer may have severe neutropenia but low risk of neutropenic fever.
  3. Recognize that autoimmune side effects of cancer treatments make oncology providers very dependent on colleagues in Pulmonology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, and Infectious Disease.
  4. Identify new problems cancer survivors may develop which ancillary services may need to manage.

Intended Audience: Physicians, advance practice professionals, nurses
