What is the CNA Grant Program?
It’s an earn-and-learn initiative for current and prospective employees to obtain Basic and Advanced Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credentials through local colleges, while receiving full financial support and on-the-job training at Mary Greeley Medical Center.
Who can apply for the program?
- Anyone new to a Patient Care Tech (PCT) role at Mary Greeley Medical Center since April 2025 is eligible.
- Current PCT who is interested in pursing either their basic or advanced CNA certification.
- Positions such as PCT, ORSAs, psych assistants, and home care/hospice aides looking to advance their education.
- PRN status ineligible.
I’m a Mary Greeley employee, but not a PCT. Can I participate in this program?
Yes, you will need to apply for a PCT job with Mary Greeley. Once you are selected and transferred to the patient care role, you will receive training at Mary Greeley. The certification course work and any books and supplies will be paid for by Mary Greeley.
What credentials can participants earn?
Two stackable, state-approved credentials:
- Basic CNA: 75 hours of foundational classroom and clinical training.
- Advanced CNA: An additional 75 hours focused on acute care and specialized patient support.
What school is this program through?
There are three schools with CNA programs in the area. You are welcome to choose the school that best first your needs. School options include DMACC (Ankeny, Boone, or Ames campus), NIACC (Mason City), or Iowa Valley Community College (Grinnell, Iowa Falls or Marshalltown campus).
How does scheduling work while working at the hospital and attending class?
Work with your leader on scheduling. Many of these programs offer programs during the day, evening, and weekends to fit scheduling needs.
Is there any cost to participants?
No. The program is fully grant-funded. It covers tuition, training materials, and employee wages/benefits during training. Tuition will be paid directly to the school by Mary Greeley. Supplies and books will be reimbursed to the employee.
Is there a deadline I have to meet in order to participate in the program?
No, there are no hard deadlines. You can begin participation in the program at any time.
Will participants be employed at Mary Greeley during the program?
Yes. Participants are hired as PCTs and receive structured on-the-job experience and mentoring throughout the program.
What happens after completing the program?
Graduates become PCT IIs (after Basic CNA) and PCT IIIs (after Advanced CNA). Those who enroll in RN programs are classified as PCT IVs and continue to progress within Mary Greeley's clinical ladder, with structured pay increases along the way.
How long does the program take?
While exact timing may vary, participants typically complete both credentials over a few months, with training integrated into their work schedules.
Am I paid for my time spent in the certification education classes?
No, time spent taking classes is not paid time. Time spent working at Mary Greeley and the associated Mary Greeley training time is paid.
