Mary Greeley Medical Center Statement on First Confirmed Case of COVID-19 in Story County

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Story County was announced today (Saturday, March 21) by the governor’s office. The person diagnosed with the virus is at home in self-quarantine and is not a patient at Mary Greeley Medical Center.

“Today’s announcement serves as another stark reminder of the seriousness of this pandemic. It also reminds all of us of the importance of following the safety recommendations that will help slow the spread of this virus,” said Brian Dieter, president and CEO of Mary Greeley. “I want to ensure all the communities we serve that Mary Greeley is focused on this crisis, and that we are doing everything we can to prepare for the patients who will inevitably come to us for care.”

People who have concerns about virus symptoms should call their primary care physician. Story County residents can also contact Story County Public Health at 515-239-6730. People with general questions about COVID-19 are urged to call the state hotline at 211. McFarland Clinic also has a COVID-19 Nurse Phone Line, 515-500-6711. This triage phone line is staffed by a team of nurses who will assess and provide advice for patients’ COVID-related conditions, determine what care is needed, and direct patients to the appropriate location.

Mary Greeley leaders urge people to continue to practice social distancing, stay at home as much as possible, and, above all, to regularly wash their hands. For the latest information on COVID-19 and what you can do to protect yourself and others, please refer to the Iowa Department of Health (idph.iowa.gov) and Centers for Disease Control (cdc.gov) websites.
