In a ceremony at the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) Annual Meeting on Wednesday, October 7, Mary Greeley Medical Center Board of Trustee, Mary Kitchell, was awarded the Excellence in Governance Award.

The award was first given in 1991 in honor of a long-time trustee and hospital supporter, Ernie Hayes. It is now given each year to the hospital trustee who most typifies the traits of strategic vision, diplomacy and leadership embodied by Ernie Hayes, who provided more than 40 years of service to hospitals.

Kitchell has served on the MGMC Board of Trustees for 15 years and is a steadfast advocate for the American Hospital Association and the Iowa Hospital Association. She was among the first to receive the voluntary trustee education certification from IHA and has received, in total, three consecutive 2-year certifications and was integral in helping MGMC’s board achieve 100% certification.

Beyond that though, she is passionate about her community and was the co-founder and manager for the local free clinic which helped to find health solutions for the uninsured and underserved populations. She has also been a member of the Mid-Iowa Community Health Committee and has served on task forces in adolescent pregnancy prevention, maternal child health, dental access and more.

One nomination form read, “Mary Kitchell exemplifies the best in healthcare governance. She is a strategic thinker, a diplomat, a leader and so much more. Few people have done more to improve the health status of Iowans than Mary has. She lives and breathes our medical center’s mission every day.”
