MGMC Introduces New Logo

Just a few weeks before the opening of its new patient tower, Mary Greeley Medical Center is introducing a new logo.

Inspired by the hospital’s heritage and the quality of care it provides people throughout central Iowa, the new logo continues the use of blue tones while featuring modern typography. The logo’s most prominent aspect is a new graphic element, which uses stylized initials “M.G.”

“Most people refer to us as ‘Mary Greeley,’ which makes the logo’s graphic particularly meaningful,” says Brian Dieter, president and CEO of the medical center. “While ‘Mary Greeley’ is the name of our founder’s wife, the name has evolved to represent a place where central Iowans know to come for high quality care.”

The quality of Mary Greeley’s care has been recognized by several national organizations. For example, each year the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid score hospitals on the basis of several key quality measures, including clinical care, readmission rates, and patient experience. Mary Greeley Medical Center is among the country’s top 20 highest scoring hospitals, and the only Iowa hospital in the top 20.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Mary Greeley’s death. Her husband, Capt. Wallace Greeley, built the hospital in her honor and gave it to the city of Ames in 1916.

The hospital’s logo is used on many things, from advertising to ambulances, publications to patient care supplies. Transitioning to the new logo will occur over the next year.

The hospital will also use a new tagline in advertising materials: “Doing What’s Right.”

“You hear that phrase around here quite often. We are always trying to do what’s right for our patients, whether it’s investing in technology you might find at a larger metropolitan hospital, launching a transition care program to help patients avoid a return to the hospital after they go home, or putting dietary staff on each floor to take meal orders from our patients,” says Dieter. “There are many ways we are ‘doing what’s right’ for our patients every day.”

Other examples cited by Dieter include:

  • Mary Greeley’s effort to increase the numbers of nurses on staff who have bachelor’s degrees. Studies show that a higher percentage of BSN prepared nurses can increase patient satisfaction and decrease mortality.
  • Maintaining one of the few inpatient behavioral health units in central Iowa.
  • Partnering with McFarland Clinic to provide patients with an advanced electronic health records system, which includes the popular MyChart patient portal.

Another example is Mary Greeley’s new patient tower, which will feature larger rooms for patients. It is scheduled to open in late April and is the first phase of a $130 million capital project, which includes a renovated main entrance and expanded emergency department.

Mary Greeley worked with Swanson-Russell, a marketing firm based in Omaha, Neb., to develop the new logo. Hospital staff, physicians and various community members provided input during the process.
