Mary Greeley Recognized As Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery & Knee and Hip ReplacementSM

AMES, IA — Wellmark® Blue Cross® and Blue Shield® has announced Mary Greeley Medical Center is being recognized by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care® program in the areas of spine surgery and knee and hip replacement.

Blue Distinction Knee and HipEstablished in 2006, the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program is a national designation awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association to Blue Distinction Spinemedical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality specialty care in a variety of areas.

The Blue Distinction Plus designation lets consumers know where they can expect to find quality and value for their specialty care needs. “Mary Greeley is proud to have met the rigorous selection criteria set by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program, which included an extensive application process and a review of quality measures based on patient safety and outcomes, as well as the cost of care,” said Brian Dieter, president and CEO of Mary Greeley.

“Earning Blue Distinction recognizes the commitment of everyone at Mary Greeley to provide excellent care for patients who come to the medical center for spine surgery and hip and knee replacement procedures,” said Dieter.

In fiscal year 2012, nearly 400 spine surgeries and more than 200 knee and hip replacements were performed at Mary Greeley Medical Center.  The hospital has previously received a Blue Distinction designation for these two specialties.

Research by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association confirms that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers and Blue Distinction Centers Plus demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. Blue Distinction Centers Plus are also more than 20 percent more cost-efficient. The program is intended to provide consumers with tools to help them make better informed healthcare decisions, and enable employers, working with their local Blue Plan, to tailor benefits to meet their individual quality objectives.
