Happy New Year!

Christmas was a lot of fun at our house. Tessa was very concerned we’d not only forget to leave Santa cookies, but we’d forget to leave the reindeer carrots. Little does she know, I did forget about the reindeer. Thank goodness for the veggie tray in our fridge with baby carrots! When we got home from our annual drive to look at Christmas lights, she walked in the house and refused to take her coat off until we had to put out the milk, cookies, and carrots for the reindeer. When I woke her up Christmas morning and said, “Tessa, Santa came while we were sleeping”, the first thing she asked while still half asleep was, “Did he eat the cookies?” Silly girl, Santa doesn’t waste cookies.

Santa came through with her favorite gift, the Paw Patrol Lookout Tower Playset. This could have been the only gift she received, as far as Tessa was concerned. I found myself with so much enjoyment watching her play with the one toy she had been asking for, since I could remember. Her face was lit up with smiles, and she was in her own world of excitement. Taylor found herself with new Nike and Under Armour gear, which is the jackpot to this 14 year old. How soon clothes change from being the worst to best gift.

The day went too fast. We spent it eating, watching movies, and watching Tessa play with her new treasures. After supper, I found myself alone in the living room. As I sat in the dimly lit room with the glow of Christmas lights around me, it was quiet. I looked around and was overcome by a feeling of happiness and blessings. I thought back to ten years ago, when I was a few weeks away from meeting Ryan. I spent Christmas at my Grandparents with my extended family, and then went to a casino with some friends. I’ll admit, it was a fun night. But I realized, my definition of fun has since dramatically changed. Then, staying out late with friends, enjoying the Omaha nightlife, and meeting a variety of new people was what I thought was the best days of my life. But that Christmas evening, I realized that these are the best days of my life. We don’t live a flashy, extravagant life. We’re not jetsetters, or trying to “keep up with the Joneses” (I hear they’re broke, anyways), but we’re happy, and live a fulfilled life and provide a loving home. A year ago I never imagined we’d have moved and definitely didn’t expect to be pregnant with not one, but two new babies. That moment to myself to reflect on what is important in life will forever be close to my heart.

Tessa and Taylor

We have now leapt into 2016. It’s a new year that presents us with a lot of blessings. April 29th is quickly approaching, and ready or not, our new baby daughters will be here. Christmas night, Ryan said to me, “Can you believe next year at this time, we’ll have a 15 year old, a 4 year old, and two 8 month olds?” No, I can’t! That seems unreal. The twins aren’t even born yet. But our family is expanding, and I feel tremendously blessed to be given this opportunity. This next year is going to be a sleepless blur, and I hope to remember most of it!
