Speech and Language Therapy
Children and adults experiencing communications difficulties can receive help from the speech-language therapists of Mary Greeley Medical Center Rehab & Wellness Department. Our goal is to help patients achieve success through highly individualized care.
Our licensed speech-language therapists are experienced in helping individuals with a variety of communications problems resulting from surgery, illness, injury, voice disorders, cognitive disability, speech delays, neurological disorders, swallowing difficulties and other conditions.
Before beginning treatment, the therapist will thoroughly evaluate a patient, and develop a therapy plan based on the patient's specific condition and needs.
Treatment may involve:
- Improving the ability of patients to communicate verbally and in writing, and to understand spoken and written language. In some cases, this involves helping them relearn how to talk.
- Working with patients to improve problem solving, the ability to focus, organizational skills, memory strategies and other mechanisms to cope with their communications difficulties.
- Helping individuals to reduce behaviors that can cause hoarseness or permanent voice damage.
- Coordinating with other specialty therapists for positioning and movement related to communication skills.
Our speech-language therapists work with inpatients as needed in the various units at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services are also available to those participating in outpatient speech therapy at our Ames and Story City locations. For more information, call 515-239-2601.
