Meals on Wheels
The Dietary Department of Mary Greeley Medical Center prepares hot noon meals every day of the year, holidays included.
Meals on Wheels volunteers ready to
deliver noon meals.
Community volunteers start delivering the meals at about 11:30 a.m., and usually have completed delivery in one hour. Special directions for delivery can be taken.
All the meals come from the hospital and are considered low salt, low fat. Special diet needs are accommodated such as “diabetic”, etc. We can also comply with any health risks to certain foods, however, personal preferences of meats, vegetables, etc. are not considered due to the number of special requests and time it adds to assembly and cost. In order to maintain our routes, we need to have meals ordered for at least 3 days each week. The client can pick and choose the number of days and what days they want the meal delivered.
A meal can be canceled for a particular day, without charge, if notification is given by 9:00 a.m. of that day. The number to call during the week is (515) 239-6730 at HOMEWARD. On the weekend and holidays, you may call Dietary at (515) 239-2173 to make any changes.
Anyone receiving Meals on Wheels may fill out a financial data sheet providing information, which may allow them to get their meal at a reduced rate. Billing statements are mailed out once a month.
A contact person is needed in case the volunteer can not deliver the meal. This is reported back to HOMEWARD and an investigation will take place.
Severe winter weather may prevent delivery of your Meals on Wheels some days. Please consider having some food on hand for these emergencies.
If we cannot deliver meals on any given day, this will be announced on the local radio station, KASI (1430 on your AM radio dial), some time after 9:00 a.m. You can also look for cancellations on KCCI Channel 8 and WHO Channel 13 on TV.
