Radiation Oncology

Radiation therapy, used alone or in combination with surgery and chemotherapy, is often an integral component in the treatment of cancer. This is done on an outpatient basis, usually five times a week for five to six weeks. Each visit takes about 20 minutes.

The Mary Greeley Medical Center Radiation Oncology Unit offers the latest, high-tech therapies, including:

• Linear accelerator radiation
• Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3-D CRT)
• Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
• Low-dose brachytherapy (in which radioactive seeds or sources are placed near the cancer itself)
• HDR (High Dose Rate) Brachytherapy
• Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRT)
• Respitory Gated Treatment planning for lung patients

Our Staff

Our staff of board-certified radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, dosimetrists (specialists in monitoring radiation levels) and registered nurses, uses a multidisciplinary approach to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. We inform patients about what to expect and how we will help them manage their treatment.

Throughout treatment, nurses draw on a number of resources to help with any side effects and dietary needs, as well as to provide any needed psychological, emotional or spiritual support.

A board-certified medical physicist regularly checks the safety and accuracy of equipment and individual treatments, ensuring that the exact level of therapy prescribed is being delivered. Our medical oncologists do weekly evaluations of each patient's progress. After treatments are completed, we provide follow-up care for any latent side effects of the therapy.
