Ambulatory Care Services

When you visit our Ambulatory Care Services, you’ll probably go home the same day. If you need to be admitted to the hospital, we’re with you every step of the way—helping make arrangements and keeping your loved ones up to date.

During your time with Ambulatory Care Services you will:

  • Check in. Our registered nurses will check you in, answer any questions and make sure you are properly prepared for your procedure.
  • Procedure.  Your procedure will take place in one of our state of the art operating rooms, cardiac catheterization laboratory or G.I. Services Department.
  • Recover. Many outpatient procedures done in a hospital setting require anesthesia. It takes varying lengths of time, sometimes up to several hours, for a person to recover from the effect. Our staff is specially trained in recovery room procedures.
  • Leave for home. Before you depart, we will make sure you have been completely briefed on any further post-procedural items and that you have sufficient assistance, depending on your needs.

  • The Mary Greeley Medical Center Patient Access staff will pre-register you for the procedure. Your referring physician/surgeon's office provides your demographic and basic insurance information. You may receive a telephone call from the Patient Access staff if they have any questions about the information they received.
  • Mary Greeley Medical Center will initiate the authorization process with your insurance company. We also encourage you to contact your insurance company to let them know you are having a procedure or surgery and ask questions you may have about your coverage.
  • Your physician may require tests such as blood and urine samples, chest X-ray and electrocardiogram. Often these tests need to be completed before admission. Your physician will arrange for these tests to be done.

Preparing for your Appointment

  • If you develop a cold, sore throat or fever, notify your physician before you are admitted.
  • On the day of your Ambulatory Care Services appointment, please come to the Information Desk inside the main entrance of the medical center.
  • Free valet parking is available at the main entrance to the hospital for your convenience.
  • Please arrive at the time specified by your physician. The admission time allows the staff to prepare you for the surgery or procedure and is not the actual time of your procedure. Exact surgical and procedural times will vary with each patient's needs.
  • Arrange for an adult friend or relative to drive you to and from the medical center.
  • You will not be allowed to drive yourself home following your surgery or procedure.

    Preparing for Anesthesia

    • Your surgeon will instruct you on when to stop eating and drinking before your surgery.
    • You may brush your teeth, but do not swallow any water.
    • Please shower or bathe with soap the evening before or morning of your procedure.
    • Do not remove hair from the surgical site as you may develop a rash after the procedure.
    • If you take any medications routinely, check with your physician about taking any medications the morning of your surgery.
    • If your physician instructs you to take medication, do so with a small sip of water.

    What to Bring

For your comfort and best recovery, we ask that you bring only one visitor. Two adults may accompany a child patient. Because of limited space and the close proximity of other recovering patients, please do not bring children.

    Please also bring:
    • your health insurance cards
    • your contact case and supplies, if needed
    • glasses, if needed
    • hearing aids, if needed
    • a list of your medications and allergies
    • a change of clothing (especially underwear) for children
Please do not bring any valuables such as cash or jewelry. Also, please do not bring any home medications with you, as you will not be allowed to take them while at the medical center.
