Orthopedic Education & Support

As a Mary Greeley Medical Center orthopedic patient, you can expect treatment for both body and mind. We treat your medical condition, and we address your needs for emotional balance, physical comfort and quality of life.

We offer many programs designed to enhance the daily lives of patients during orthopedic treatment and rehabilitation.

Joint Replacement Education Classes

Patients who are having, or considering having, joint replacement surgery at Mary Greeley Medical Center should attend one of the free, preoperative joint replacement education classes.

The 90-minute joint replacement education classes help patients understand all the important details they need to know before, the day of, and after their procedure at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Led by a team of Mary Greeley Medical Center physical therapist, nurses and social workers, the class topics include what to bring to the hospital, pre-surgery exercises, pain education, equipment that may be used after the hospital stay, the in-hospital rehabilitation process and how to prepare a patient for recovery at home. Patients are encouraged to bring spouses and other caretakers to the Total Joint Preoperative Class.

Wellness Programs

The Rehab & Wellness Department encompasses all of Mary Greeley Medical Center physical rehabilitation and wellness services and a variety of disciplines. Our goal is to improve the health, functional ability and quality of life for the people we serve in central Iowa.

Many patients can access our services directly without referral, but it is always a good idea to check with your insurance company. If your doctor has recommended any of our rehab services, you have the choice of two locations to receive those services - Ames and Story City.

The Alter G anti-gravity treadmill allows people who have had orthopedic injuries and surgeries to begin walking and running earlier than normal in the therapy process without pain or weight bearing restrictions. This is possible because the AlterG decreases weight pressure on the affected body part. An AlterG treatment differs from using a swimming pool, another popular physical rehab tool, because the treadmill takes away the water resistance and allows for a normal gait pattern.
