Description

Couples RetreatWe would like to invite couples living with metastatic cancers to join us for a weekend of education, meditation, recreation and refreshment.

In addition to your health, metastatic cancer can affect you and your partner’s daily routines, quality of life and relationship. You’ll receive support and encouragement from medical professionals for dealing with these effects. Take this opportunity to ask questions, express concerns and offer support to your partner and your peers.

We’ll take time out to enjoy good food and company. You can also relax and indulge in a complimentary massage by a licensed massage therapist.

Contact the Cancer Resource Center for more information at 515-956-6440 or e-mail carano@mgmc.org. Due to limited space, registration will be based on date of receipt of application.

Program Highlights

Dr. Ken Israel will lead the couples in a discussion on communicating with each other. He is a clinical psychologist at Ames Counseling and Psychological Services and works with both individuals and couples. He has also co-led groups at the William R. Bliss Cancer Center.

Pastor David Burling will discuss spirituality with the couples. He began the hospital chaplaincy program at Mary Greeley Medical Center in 1993. He is now an Associate Pastor at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames and volunteers as the chaplain for the Nevada Police Department.

Chris Cowan is a local area artist and a founding member of Creative Artists Studio of Ames. She will guide the couples in some exercises with drawing and use of color for relaxation, renewal, self-expression and communication. No experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided.

Tami Briggs, a pioneer in the harp therapy field, brings a unique set of skills and an experiential approach as a health educator and speaker. By weaving together powerful stories and practical tips with live musical examples, she demonstrates music’s role in the healing process.

This program has been made possible by the support of the many donors of the Mary Greeley Medical Center Foundation.
