Mary Greeley Medical Center Nurses Honored with 100 Great Iowa Nurses Award

Ames, Iowa-Mary Greeley Medical Center is proud to announce that Terry DeWald, R.N., and Bret Peyton, R.N., have been selected to be honored among the 100 Great Iowa Nurses for 2010. DeWald is a registered nurse on the Oncology Unit and Peyton is a registered nurse in the Emergency Department at Mary Greeley Medical Center.

DeWald came to Mary Greeley Medical Center after hearing from her daughter, who was also an Oncology nurse, who spoke positively of the medical center. Much of DeWald's background was in long term care, but she enjoys working in Oncology. "I like the challenge of learning something new," she says. She also likes getting to know the patients and their families.

Peyton became interested in medicine after completing a basic-level EMT class in 1985. He came to Mary Greeley Medical Center in 2007 with over a decade of nursing experience. He credits the Emergency Department staff for their teamwork. "I've been very fortunate to have worked with professionals who have encouraged me," he says. "We're more of a family than coworkers."

The 100 Great Iowa Nurses award recognizes that the nurses have made a meaningful and lasting contribution to humanity and their profession and are viewed as a mentor to others.  They exemplify the principles on which the 100 Great Nurses Celebration was founded.

The Mary Greeley Medical Center nurses will be among those honored on Sunday, May 2, at the 6th annual celebration of Iowa's Great Nurses. The 2010 honorees will gather at a reception at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines with their family, friends and colleagues, as well as past years' recipients, to be recognized for their outstanding careers and achievements.

Nurses selected for the honor represent many sectors of health care, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and school and office nurses. The primary sponsors of this event are Mercy Health Network, the University of Iowa College of Nursing, the Des Moines Register and Iowa Health Systems. Similar celebrations of the nursing profession are held in the states of Louisiana, North Carolina and Texas.
